CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE CHRONICLES

The prevalence of CKD has increased considerably over the past 2 decades. The rising rates of CKD have been attributed to known comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity; however, recent research has begun to explore the degree to which social, economic, and psychological factors have implications for the prevalence and progression of CKD, especially among high-risk populations such as African Americans. It has been suggested that stress can have implications for CKD, but this area of research has been largely unexplored. One contributing factor associated with the paucity of research on CKD is that many of the social, psychological, and environmental stressors cannot be recreated or simulated in a laboratory setting. Social science has established that stress can have implications for health, and we believe that stress is an important determinant of the development and progression of CKD. We draw heavily from the social scientific and social epidemiologic literature to

When the doctor told me I was in 4th stage CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease)  I didn't believe him So the first thing I did was to educate myself about kidneys; what they are and what they do.  Because I always drank plenty of water and constantly urinated.Well, one of the number one signs that you may be suffering from Kidney Disease is constant urination - especially at night.

Also be aware of changes in urination.  Color, foaminess, smell, or blood in urine could be an indication of kidney problems.

Another sign is lower back pain or pain in your sides. These can actually be pain from your kidneys.

Other early symptoms to include:

  • anemia,
  • changes in the way your food tastes,
  • loss of appetite,
  • dizziness,
  • headaches,
  • difficulty thinking clearly,
  • shortness of breath,
  • fatigue,
  • itchy skin or rash.

When it finally sunk in that the doctor was right, I had to find out what exactly it is that I am dealing with.  What exactly do the kidneys do and what function has my body lost and how will dialysis help?   Upon accepting the inevitable, I had to undergo a series of blood tests to determine my level of kidney function, or lack thereof.  The one thing the doctor was very concerned about is something called the creatinine level.  The normal rang is .06 - 1.2 milligrams.  My levels?  8.6. Very very high.  This is want sent me to the hospital on the even of Xmas, 2018.
CONTRIBUTING FACTORS Of course as with all health related problems in the United States,  the disparity among African American, Latinos and Native Americans is still in effect.  Two major contributing factors are diabetes and hypertension - which are also prevalent among the aforementioned groups.

THE BOTTOM LINE....EAT RIGHT.
Two things we have to be careful about are Sodium, Potassium and Phosphorus.  These are not our friends!  Instead of focusing on what we CAN'T ear, I will focus on some of the many delicious foods that we CAN eat!

FINANCIAL TURMOIL CAUSED BY A FLAWED SYSTEM

As I have stated before, I have been without income and in an ongoing battle with the Social Security Administration actually since March, 2017.  On Christmas Eve, 2018 I found myself suddenly at stage 4 renal failure and in March 5, 2019 was denied disability benefits.  My attorney filed an appeal, then advised me that it would be better to just file a new claim since I now have to be on dialysis 3 times per week, 4 hours per day.  So that is what I did.  I finally hear from SSA in June saying my SSDI has been approved effective March 6.. But, will not start until October because of the 5 month waiting period.  So, now, not only did I need to appeal the date of disability, but also the amount, which they based on me receiving monthly Worker's Comp payments; payments that I had not received since Feb, 2018.  (There are 2 different benefit categories for disability benefits.  One is guaranteed whether you have worked all of your life or not.  Usually, EVERYONE WHO IS ON DIALYSIS IS APPROVED FOR THIS ONE REGARDLESS OF WORK HISTORY.  THEY RECEIVE THIS BENEFIT ( CALLED SSI ) UNTIL  SSDI  KICKS IN AFTER THE 5 MONTH WAITING PERIOD.  THIS IS WHAT USUALLY HAPPENS, JUST NOT FOR ME.)  The system is thoroughly flawed.  So, for the last 6 weeks, I spend my Monday Mornings on the phone with my local SSA office.  Sometimes I get hung up on 5 times sometimes 10.  Now, mind you, I have and ADVOCATE!  A place called HumarArk.  A non-profit the assists you with applying for and obtaining SSI benefits.  Well, this is learning experience for both me and my assigned worker, who, has no idea what she is doing.  She is learning how frustrating this experience is for people.  She also has experienced being hung up on 10 times and then being denied access to speak on my behalf because...not get this... THE DOCUMENT THAT SHE FAXED TO THEM 4 TIMES, A DOCUMENT SIGNED BY ME GIVING HER PERMISSION TO SPEAK ON MY BEHALF, SHE FAXED IT 4 TIMEX SINCE MARCH.  THEY STILL DIDN'T HAVE IT AS OF LAST WEEK AND SHE HAD TO FAX AGAIN.  So today, I only felt like being hung on one twice.  Calling is just part of my Monday Morning Mania.  Someone told me that every time I call they put my file back on the bottom of the pile.  smh.  Pray that you guys don't see me on the 6 0'clock news!!!
